Church History

The history of the Cedar Hill Missionary Church has been traced to a small group of people who were worshipping under a brush arbor in the Cottage Grove area of West Tennessee in1880.  It was believed that land was purchased from James Todd, a local landowner.  Construction of a building is believed to have been started when the Rev. Wyatte Johnson was pastor. Before this building was completed, it was destroyed by fire. A number of years passed before the small congregation was able to construct another building.  Itwas known that a school was also housed here. As the church grew, some of the pastors were: Rev. S. P.  Travan, Rev. David Howard, Rev. E. Northington and Rev. J. L.  Nunley.  The building was completed during Rev. Nunley's  pastorage. Rev. Horthington, Rev. J. H. Holmes and Rev. G. P. Woodson were also remembered as pastors as the church continued to grow.  In 1907, Rev. S. M. Jackson who pastored 20 years had services every two Sundays. Hewas followed by Rev. J.C. Brodgeman, Rev.  E. L. Bowden and Rev. A. Allen. Under Rev. Allen's ministry, the church built a baptistery, annexed two rooms and obtained electric power  and city water. Rev. C. E. Ward  pastored for five years. During this time, pews, fans and lights were purchased and services were held every Sunday. Rev. Itolia  Cowan followed as pastor afterwhich Rev. James Stewart became pastor and was responsible for having the sanctuary  paneled and was also very instrumental in getting the young adults to become actively involved in worship. Rev. Stewart  is the only living former pastor of Cedar Hill. Rev. Stewart was followed by Rev. Leroy Batey and during this time, Cedar Hill purchased their first van.  For the past 21 years, Rev. Kenneth E.  Humphreys has  pastored  Cedar Hill where many accomplishments have been made under his leadership and with God's help. Growth and prosperity in the Christian field has continued and on July 18, 1999, Cedar Hill observed their first worship service in a new state of the art sanctuary. The sanctuary is complete with new furnishings, a piano and organ.  The previous sanctuary has been renovated to make it as modern as possible and Sunday School, Bible Study Prayer Service is held there each week.  It also serves as the fellowship hall.  Cedar Hill continues to grow and glow in God's grace and with the help of faithful Christian members.
